Reflection for TLM 1010

Final Reflection for TLM1010

Through the course of this module, I believe that I have learnt a lot more about effective communication through both verbal and written means. I believe that the feedback I received from Professor Brad and my fellow classmates have been extremely beneficial in helping me to identify and rectify my mistakes in my assignments. While the assignments have been time-consuming, I believe that the exposure to more of such writing and presentation assignments would undoubtedly help me and my classmates become more confident and proficient in written and oral communication.

At the start of the module, I set a goal for myself to become more proficient at speaking to a larger audience. Fortunately, I got the chance to do so as an emcee for the presentation showcase, which helped me to become more confident and realise that my fear for talking to a large audience was merely a mental barrier.

The presentation showcase was truly an eye-opener for me. Despite not getting the opportunity to present and compete in the showcase, I got the chance to become an emcee with Ying Quan, which is something new for me. As I have previously mentioned that I was uncomfortable with engaging a larger audience, this was an opportunity for me to improve and overcome this. The entire experience as an emcee taught me to adapt quickly and to stay calm even if I were to make a mistake. Due to this being my first time as an emcee, I was caught off-guard for last-minute changes to the flow of the showcase. This situation forced me to react on the spot to ensure that the showcase would carry on smoothly. Overall, while the experience was new and stressful, I am grateful that I managed to gain this opportunity for it has allowed me to gain the exposure of engaging a larger audience, as well as become more confident in public speaking.

  3. Dear Kai Wei,

Thank you for this fluent and detailed reflection. I appreciate that you had a concern for your oral presenting skills at the term's start and that you feel you improved on those skills. You also mention the feedback that was given and how that feedback helped you work through an understanding of what needed to be corrected and then how to do that. Your fine work on the assignments has been testament to the work you did!

I'm also happy to learn that you valued participating in the presentation showcase as an emcee. I'm glad we could find something for you to do outside your usual confort zone, and you and Quan did a very fine job, too, which made all of us in Group 1 proud.

In general, I feel you made an excellent effort this term. I especially appreciate your many contributions to our classroom discussions. All the best as you continue your learning journey!

    Brad
